Pharrell Williams always considered himself ‘lazy’.

The ‘Happy’ hitmaker has explained how he didn’t realize he had the necessary ‘drive’ to pursue his creative talents, having worked in the music industry from a young age.

Pharrell told Britain’s HELLO! magazine: “Everyone is born with creativity, but some are born with a strong connection to it. Some are born with drive. Some are creative but don’t feel the drive. Some don’t necessarily have the best creativity, but they want it so much .

“I didn’t know I had that drive. I thought of myself as lazy for years, but I just wasn’t inspired.

“When I’m motivated, I’m the first one to leave Monday morning and the last one Friday evening. I’m blessed to have been connected to what I love early in life.”

Pharrell’s life story is told in Lego form in the film ‘Piece by Piece’ and says working on the project has allowed him to reflect on his experiences with fresh eyes.

The 51-year-old star said: “Essentially this film is my thesis on my humility. I spent most of my time being arrogant, pompous, incredibly cocky and boastful. That was my musical environment and that’s what I thought I needed to be.

“When I turned 40, the universe humbled me. I realized that it wasn’t all about me and that I was part of something bigger. I was lucky that I wasn’t a word or a sentence, just punctuation marks.

‘The moment it dawns on you, you realize how lucky you are to be in that conversation. Humility is how you get to that place.”
