Owner of euthanized social media-famous squirrel vows action against New York officials

Mark Longo, Peanut the squirrel’s caretaker, expressed disbelief after New York state officials seized and euthanized the animal, creating a social media sensation in Pine City.

The state Department of Environmental Conservation seized Peanut and a raccoon named Fred from Longo’s property, citing complaints of illegal and potentially unsafe possession of wildlife.

Officials stated that both animals were euthanized to test for rabies after a reported biting incident.

Longo, who had hoped to get Peanut recognized as an educational animal, criticized the state’s response as “surreal” and “heavy-handed,” vowing to take action to ensure his concerns are heard. Peanut, known for performing tricks and donning little hats, had charmed tens of thousands of people on social media.
