Kottayam: When thieves spot an iPhone, they hesitate to take it because they know they are more likely to get caught. But when it comes to laptops, they act quickly and try to grab them unnoticed. Despite numerous complaints, the recovery of stolen laptops remains rare. Most of the thieves involved in train thefts in the region are from other states.

AC and reserved coaches are the main target of the thieves. Some arrive dressed in ‘executive’ style, with laptop bags in hand, and start planning their thefts as soon as they buy tickets. They often purchase sleeper class tickets and later upgrade to AC tickets by paying an additional fee, thus avoiding identification as reservation tickets require ID. The thieves observe passengers to assess potential targets, especially those who leave their phones or laptops unsecured while they sleep.

Theft rings involving outsiders

Many of the thieves arrested for train thefts in Kerala are from other states. Some buyers from other states are also involved in purchasing stolen goods along with local buyers. The police have discovered a gang in Perumbavoor that specializes in unlocking stolen mobile phones. iPhones sell for between Rs 15,000 and Rs 25,000, while Android phones go for Rs 500 to Rs 2,000.

The value of stolen laptops depends on the make and model. Despite numerous complaints filed with the railway police, investigations into these thefts are often limited. Complainants are often told that an investigation will take place, but little action is taken due to the high investigation costs, which often exceed the value of the stolen items.

Only when a thief is caught do previous thefts come to light. But by then the stolen items are often long gone.
