Standardbred racehorse sold for record price during Pa. Farm Show Sale

A Standardbred racehorse named Amazing Catch sold for a great price at an auction in Harrisburg on Friday.

The three-year-old trotting colt sold for a record $1.85 million during the final session of the 86th annual Standardbred Horse Sale at the Farm Show Complex.

Amazing Catch, a son of Walner-Mets Life, was purchased by Ohio-based real estate coach Greg Luther.

A trotting mare named Atlanta set the previous record for a Standardbred sold at public auction when she was purchased for $1.55 million in 2019.

In his career, Amazing Catch has won three races and finished second or third in others, earning more than $870,000.

“I obviously thought he was a very nice horse,” Luther said. “We plan to race him at age 4, try to win all the big races there and then put him to stud. We’ve already had calls from every state asking if they can get access to him. We are very excited about him.”

Amazing Catch was the third horse to sell for seven figures at the Standardbred Horse Sale. Others included Hot Mess Hanover, which sold for $1 million, and the trotting colt Cambridge Hanover, which also went for $1 million.

“I was planning on spending (Amazing Catch) somewhere between $1.5 million and $2 million,” Luther said. “It’s so great for the sport. I really think it’s a great move for everyone. At the sale here we had a million dollar yearling, a million dollar broodmare and a nearly two million dollar racehorse. So the sector is strong.”
