The COP29 in Azerbaijan hosts an event focused on eco-colonialism (PHOTO)

BAKU, Azerbaijan, November 13. The event entitled “Eco-colonialism: The Ecological Legacy of Colonial and Neocolonial Exploitation” was held today in the framework of COP29, organized by the Baku Initiative Group (BIG), Trend
reports.

The speakers of the event drew attention to the work of determining the extent of damage done to nature in the areas enslaved by colonial states over the years, as well as the environmental crimes committed by them in these areas exploited from an ecological point of view.

During the event, representatives of the peoples under the colonization of France and the Netherlands spoke about the current situation in their countries. Issues related to the illegal exploitation of resources in overseas territories by colonial powers in the colonized territories, deforestation, land pollution, including the environmental impact of nuclear tests conducted by France in French Polynesia and compensation still not paid by France to the affected population, pollution of nature due to the use of chlordecone in Guadeloupe, and serious damage to the health of the local population, the exploitation of nickel deposits in New Caledonia, including the spread of various diseases due to the exploitation from Mayotte.

Speakers linked the more serious effects of climate change in overseas territories to colonialism and demanded that France and the Netherlands meet the demands of indigenous peoples.

Note that the 29th session of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29) started on November 11 in Baku. The United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change is an agreement signed at the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro. Janeiro in June 1992 to prevent dangerous human interference with the climate system.

The abbreviation COP (Conference of Parties) stands for “Conference of Parties” and is the highest legislative body that oversees the implementation of the Framework Convention on Climate Change.

A total of 198 countries are parties to the treaty. Unless the Parties decide otherwise, the COP will be held annually. The first COP event took place in March 1995 in Berlin and its secretariat is located in Bonn.
