Attack on Titan: The Last Attack exceeds expectations with the opening box office of the weekend

Attack on Titan: The Final Strike has been in the news a lot lately. Besides being the first and possibly last film of the brutal anime franchise, the recent film is one that added a whole new scene to the anime’s lore. Leading up to the film’s release in Japan, The final attack has touted new footage that would be added to the compilation film in the form of a new post-credits scene. While anime fans may have already witnessed the final episodes of the television series that make up this film, that isn’t stopping theatergoers from helping out Attack on Titan: The Final Strike fumbling around at the cash register.

Attack on Titan: The Final Strike has clawed its way to the top spot of the box office in Japan and has managed to catch up Venom: The Last Dance for the crown. The compilation film grossed around $1.63 million in Japan, which may not seem like much compared to Hollywood blockbusters, but it’s a good takeaway when you consider what The Last Attack is. Shockingly enough, Attack on Titan was able to overtake not only films like Venom: The Last Dance And Redbut a brand new anime movie hitting the big screen. Kamen Rider’s latest anime movie, Fuuto Tantei: Kamen Rider Skull no Shozotook fifth place, after the theatrical debut of the Scout Regiment.

The power of anime compilations

Attack on Titan is in good company when it comes to anime properties bringing together their biggest installments for the big screen. In recent history we have seen examples of series such as Demon Slayer, Dandadan, Dragon Ball Daimaand more are coming to the big screen thanks to the compilation of previous episodes. Unfortunately, The final attack has yet to confirm if the film will make its way from Japan to North America, although it has become the number one film in the Eastern company. Fingers crossed that we’ll see the Scout Regiment hit the big screen in the West.

Attack on Titan Post-credits scene

As mentioned previously, The final attack has a brand new post-credits scene that many anime fans didn’t see coming. Rather than hinting at a possible sequel to the franchise, the scene in question gives anime fans a glimpse into an alternate reality where Armin, Mikasa, and Eren Jaeger aren’t fighting for the fate of the world. Instead of, the trio watches Attack on Titan: The Final Strike themselves and comment on what was happening on the screen.

The scene originally took place in “Attack on School Castes,” a series of short stories from creator Hajime Isayama that reimagined the characters of the brutal franchise. In this alternate world, Titans do not exist and the Survey Corps live in a reality much like our own. While there’s no word yet on this spinoff getting its own series, there are a handful of other segments from the manga that have yet to be adapted.

As for Attack on Titan as a whole, the series doesn’t seem to create any new stories in its universe. Hajime Isayama has stated in the past that he has no plans to return to this universe for a full series, although the artist is more than willing to return to it should the need arise. Earlier this year, Isayama created a short story, Attack on Titan: Bad Boywhich explored Captain Levi’s early days before strapping on his three-dimensional maneuvering gear. If Hajime is working on a new manga in this universe, we here at ComicBook.com will be sure to let you know.
