Person who confronted two thieves threatened with a machete: Sault Police

Suspects were arrested at a Great Northern Road business on November 12 with a shopping trolley full of stolen items, police claim

Two suspected thieves were arrested yesterday after one of them allegedly threatened a person with a machete.

On Nov. 12 around 2:15 p.m., someone called 911 to report a person was being threatened with a weapon in the 400 block of Great Northern Road.

“Investigation revealed that the two suspects stole items from outside a business when confronted by the victim,” says a news release from the Sault Ste. Marie Police Department.

One of the suspects threatened the person with a machete, police say, before both people left the business with a cart full of stolen items valued at more than $3,900.

The victim was not injured, police said.

Cecil Cuthbertson, 49, is charged with assault with a weapon, possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose and theft under $5,000.

Brandon Zimmerman, 21, is charged with theft under $5,000.

Both suspects have been released on bond and will appear in court again on January 20, 2025.

None of the charges have been tested in court and both suspects are presumed innocent unless proven guilty.
