Jannik Sinner emulates the performances of Novak Djokovic and Bjorn Borg during the ATP Finals

Jannik Sinner has followed in the footsteps of three tennis legends by achieving another massive statistical milestone at the 2024 ATP Finals.

The world number 1 has continued his remarkable 2024 campaign by winning all three of his round robin matches in Turin without dropping a set.

Sinner lost no more than four games in the six sets he played, while dropping serve only twice.

After wins over Alex de Minaur and Taylor Fritz, Sinner’s 6-3, 6-4 victory against Daniil Medvedev in his third match saw him finish top of the John Newcombe group.

The Italian, who finished second at the 2023 ATP Finals, revealed he has a different feeling than when he reached the semi-finals at last year’s edition of the event.

“Yes, of course. I mean, it’s always a different feeling. It doesn’t really matter how you get to a tournament or not. It’s nice to be here in the semi-finals again,” Sinner told the media after beating Medvedev.

“It’s a different year, a different player. Like everyone else, we try. I believe we have all improved a lot in one year. It’s nice to be back in these positions where I can play for a final place again. Then we’ll see how it goes.”

Daniil Medvedev makes stunning Jannik Sinner ‘Big 4’ claim after ATP Finals defeat

Carlos Alcaraz was praised for having a ‘deeper talent level’ than former player Jannik Sinner

Sinner’s victory against world number four Medvedev was his tenth win against a player in the top five of the ATP rankings this season.

Having also recorded ten wins against the top five opponents in 2023, Sinner has become only the fourth player to achieve this in consecutive seasons since the ATP rankings were introduced in 1973.

The other men to have ten or more wins against players ranked in the top five in consecutive years are Bjorn Borg (1979-80), Ivan Lendl (1985-86) and Novak Djokovic (2011-12).

Five of Sinner’s top five wins this year came against Medvedev, while he recorded two against Djokovic, and one each against Andrey Rublev, Alexander Zverev and Taylor Fritz.

Four of Sinner’s six losses this season have been against top-five players, giving him a 10–4 record against such opponents.

The 23-year-old will face world number 7 Casper Ruud in the semi-finals in Turin, while he could face second-ranked Zverev or fifth-ranked Fritz in Sunday’s final.

When asked what made him so good this week after his dominance in the round robin stage, Sinner said: “I don’t know. I am here, I know what I have achieved this year. I try to go onto the field with a good attitude.

“I have a great team behind me. I have wonderful people around me who support me every day, which is even more important to me. When it comes to tennis, I at least try to enjoy it while I’m on the court.

“When I’m off the field, I try to prepare as best I can for every game. The atmosphere is great. I just try to play good tennis.”
